Obstructive Sleep Apnea Risk is Associated with Number of White Matter Hyperintensities, But History of Mild TBI Exposure is Not: A LIMBIC-CENC Study

Question

: Is sleep apnea risk associated with clinical markers of brain health, above and beyond history of TBI?

Findings

: In this secondary analysis of a large combat-exposed cohort, number of white matter hyperintensities (a neuroimaging marker of brain health) was associated with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, older age, higher sleep apnea risk, and history of mild TBI, with older age being the strongest association. When looking specifically at participants who had at least one white matter hyperintensity, higher risk of sleep apnea predicted a higher number of white matter hyperintensities, but history of mild TBI did not.

Meaning

: Sleep apnea may be related to worse brain health, above and beyond the impact of mild TBI.
