Main Question
Among Veterans with mTBI, what factors influence adherence to insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea treatment plans?
Study Findings
Barriers to sleep disorder treatment adherence were negative appraisal of treatment benefit, side effects, cognitive challenges, limited availability of care, and economic instability. Facilitators of sleep disorder treatment adherence were positive appraisal of treatment benefit, flexible treatment delivery format, access to adherence support, and social support.
Practical Uses
Barriers and facilitators of sleep disorder treatment adherence are similar to other medical and mental health conditions. Clinicians should consider motivational Interviewing and other sleep disorder guideline strategies to best engage Veterans with mTBI in treatment planning and implementation.
